Pennsylvania Railroad L1s

Steam and Early Locomotives

The Pennsylvania Railroad class L1s was a 2-8-2 Mikado steam freight locomotive and the largest class of 2-8-2 engines anywhere, with 574 built between 1914 and 1919 by the railroad's own Juniata Shops, the Baldwin Locomotive Works and the Lima Locomotive Works. It shared its boiler and many parts with the K4s Pacific, giving the railroad 425 locomotives with common components, and its design was close to the Santa Fe 3160 class that became the basis for the USRA Heavy Mikado. It was soon overshadowed by the I1s Decapod and the M1 Mountain, and many were stored in the Depression and recalled in World War II. Number 520 survives at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
