Great Northern P-1

Steam and Early Locomotives

The Great Northern P-1 was a class of fifteen 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotives that the Lima Locomotive Works of Ohio built in 1914 for the Great Northern Railway. They were bought to haul passenger trains, but in service they proved too slow for that work and were reassigned to freight. In 1928 the railway rebuilt all fifteen in its own Superior, Great Falls and Hillyard shops as the Q-2 class, a 2-10-2 Santa Fe type, so the original Mountain arrangement lasted only fourteen years. Retirement of the rebuilt engines began in July 1953 and the last was gone by April 1958. Neither the P-1 nor the Q-2 form was preserved, so the class survives only in rosters and photographs, which makes it a useful example of a railway rebuilding an unsuccessful passenger design into a freight engine.
