Chesapeake and Ohio class T-1

Steam and Early Locomotives

The Chesapeake and Ohio T-1 was a class of forty 2-10-4 Texas-type steam locomotives built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1930 for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The railway ordered them after testing Lima's Super Power prototype A-1 on its Allegheny Subdivision, and they shared design features with the Erie Railroad's 2-8-4 Berkshires. Fitted with a trailing truck booster, they could haul trains as long as those of the H-7 class 2-8-8-2 at a higher speed, and they had the most heating surface of any two-cylinder steam locomotive, 9,654 square feet. Their long wheelbase made proper counterbalancing hard and late in service they rode roughly; the Pennsylvania Railroad based its J1 class 2-10-4s on them in 1942. Retirement began in 1952, all were out of service by 1953, and none were preserved.
