Port of Shanghai

Ports and Harbor Infrastructure

The Port of Shanghai is the world's busiest container port, handling a greater volume of shipping containers each year than any other port on earth, a position it built as China became the world's leading manufacturing exporter. Its facilities extend well beyond the mouth of the Yangtze River to include the large deep-water terminal at Yangshan, built on artificial islands and connected to the mainland by a long sea bridge, specifically to give the port the deep water that the silty Yangtze estuary could not provide. The port's scale reflects both Shanghai's own role as a commercial center and its position at the mouth of the Yangtze, China's principal inland shipping artery.

The Port of Shanghai has no single completion date: it developed from an 1842 treaty port into its modern container-shipping form over more than a century. 2005 marks the completion of the Yangshan deep-water port expansion described in the source consulted, not the founding of the port itself.
Significance
In 2010, the Port of Shanghai overtook the Port of Singapore to become the world's busiest container port. 1
