The three carriers' own records support different claims. KLM, founded 1919, is the oldest airline still operating under its original name; Avianca dates its founding to 1919 through SCADTA, but under a changed name and merged corporate lineage; Qantas, founded November 1920, counts itself among the oldest airlines still in operation. None of the three encyclopedic accounts asserts a strict ordering, and the answer turns entirely on what counts as continuity: name, corporate identity, or unbroken operations.

What would resolve this An agreed continuity criterion, original name, unbroken corporate identity, or unbroken operations, applied consistently to the three founding and merger histories. Under each criterion a different carrier can claim the title, so the dispute is definitional rather than factual, and stating the criterion resolves it.
