Vanden Plas

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

Vanden Plas began as a Belgian coachbuilder, Carrosserie Van den Plas, founded in Brussels in 1870, and an English company carrying the name was set up in 1913 to build bodies under licence. Under the Fox brothers from 1923 it bodied Bentley chassis and other quality cars, and from 1946 it was a subsidiary of Austin, building the Austin Princess limousines. BMC then treated it as a marque in its own right, and under BMC and British Leyland the name became the badge of luxury versions of the 1100 and 1300, the Allegro and later models, while in North America it replaced Daimler on the top Jaguars.
