Sterling was a brand of cars that the Rover Group sold in the United States and Canada from 1987 to 1991, through a North American division first called Austin Rover Cars of North America and later renamed Sterling Motor Cars. The only Sterling model was the Rover 800 series, rebadged and tuned for North American buyers and offered with a V6 petrol engine only, built in partnership with Honda, whose Legend was sold as the Acura Legend. Only the 825 saloon was sold in 1987 and 1988, then the 827 with a larger Honda engine and a hatchback body joined it in 1989, and 350 Oxford Edition cars were built in 1990. Sales peaked at just over 14,000 cars in 1987, but poor early build quality, electrical and paint faults and a strong British pound drove the company out, and Rover announced its withdrawal from North America in August 1991 after fewer than 2,000 sales that year.
