Saviem, the Société Anonyme de Véhicules Industriels et d'Équipements Mécaniques, was a French maker of trucks and of buses and coaches that belonged to the Renault group and had its head office in Suresnes. It was formed in October 1955 when Renault merged its heavy vehicle operations with Somua and Latil, became a wholly owned Renault subsidiary in 1959, and concentrated truck assembly at Blainville-sur-Orne and bus and coach assembly at Annonay. It built partnerships with other manufacturers, among them Henschel, MAN, Perkins and Alfa Romeo engines, and in 1975 became a co-founder of the Club of Four medium truck cooperation with DAF, Volvo and Magirus-Deutz. In 1978 Saviem was merged with Berliet to form Renault Véhicules Industriels, and the Saviem badge ended in April 1980 when the vehicles took the Renault name.
