Kuybyshev Railway

Railway and Rail Transit Operators

The Kuybyshev Railway is a subsidiary of Russian Railways operating across nine regions of Russia, including Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Mordovia, Ryazan, Penza, Tambov, Ulyanovsk, Samara and Orenburg, with a network totaling more than 11,500 kilometers headquartered in Samara. Its oldest component, the line between Morshansk and Syzran, was built between 1872 and 1875, and the railway took its present name in 1936, honoring Bolshevik official Valerian Kuybyshev and the renamed city of Samara. Formed by combining several major lines after the Russian Revolution, the network has remained a central artery for freight and passenger traffic across the middle Volga region. It is remembered too for the 1989 Ufa train disaster along its route, the deadliest rail accident recorded in Soviet history, which killed 575 people.
