Hillman was a British car marque that began as the Hillman-Coatalen Company in 1907, founded by the Coventry bicycle maker William Hillman with the Breton engineer Louis Coatalen as designer, and was renamed the Hillman Motor Car Company in 1910. It was based at Ryton-on-Dunsmore near Coventry. The Rootes brothers took control in 1928 and merged it with Humber, and from the early 1930s it became the small-car marque of the Rootes empire, best known for the Minx, the Husky, the rear-engined Imp and the Hunter. Chrysler bought Rootes in 1967 and kept the badge in use until 1976, launching the Avenger in 1970 as the first Hillman financed by the American company. Peugeot later bought Chrysler's European operations and owns the Hillman name.
