Genesee and Wyoming Inc.

Genesee and Wyoming Inc. is an American short-line and regional freight railroad holding company founded in 1899 to serve a gypsum mine near Genesee County and Wyoming County, New York. It grew from that single short line into one of the largest short-line railroad operators in the world, owning and operating freight railroads and providing related rail services across North America, the United Kingdom, continental Europe and Australia. The company's business model concentrates on serving individual industrial shippers and connecting them to Class I railroads, filling gaps the major national networks do not serve directly. Genesee and Wyoming was taken private in 2019 when it was acquired by Brookfield Infrastructure and GIC in a deal valuing the company at roughly eight billion dollars, and it continues to operate under its own name as a private freight rail holding company.
