Canadair Ltd. was a Canadian civil and military aircraft manufacturer that operated from 1944 to 1986, with its main factory at Cartierville in the Saint-Laurent borough of Montreal. The government of Canada created it as a separate entity on 11 November 1944, taking over the work of Canadian Vickers, and it began by building Consolidated PBY Canso flying boats for the Royal Canadian Air Force. It was later a subsidiary of Electric Boat, General Dynamics and Convair, and the Canadian government nationalized it in 1976. Its products included the CT-114 Tutor trainer, the CL-215 water bomber, the experimental CL-84 tiltwing and the Challenger 600 business jet. Canadair was privatized in 1986, when its assets were acquired by Bombardier Aerospace, which made it a core element of its aerospace division.
