The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, created by the United States Congress in 1970 and beginning service on 1 May 1971, taking over intercity passenger rail service from private freight railroads that had been steadily abandoning unprofitable passenger routes. It remains the primary operator of intercity passenger rail in the United States, receiving federal subsidy.
