Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway (1846-1917)

Railway and Rail Transit Operators

The Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway, known as the CH&D, was a railroad based in Ohio that existed from its incorporation on March 2, 1846, until its acquisition by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in December 1917. It was originally chartered to build a line from Cincinnati to Hamilton and then to Dayton, a distance of about 59 miles, and further construction and acquisition extended the railroad until by 1902 it owned or controlled 640 miles of track. Its stock and bond value collapsed in late 1905 after financial mismanagement of its properties was revealed, and it was reorganized as the Toledo and Cincinnati Railroad in 1917.
