The twin-shock Honda XR500 was introduced in 1979 as the first XR model, with a four-stroke, four-valve OHC 497 cc Pentroof engine, a conventional 18 inch rear wheel and an unusual 23 inch front wheel that was supposed to be better for riding over potholes and ruts. The 23 inch size proved unpopular because the wheel and tire assembly was heavy and there was little choice of replacement tires. For the 1979 model year only, an XR185 was sold in some markets.
