Scottish engineer who developed macadam, a road building method using layers of compacted, angular crushed stone that shed water and bore traffic without the deep stone foundations earlier road builders had used. Adopted across Britain, then Europe and North America in the early to mid nineteenth century, it was the standard road surface until the later development of asphalt, or tarmac, itself a refinement of the macadam surface. FAQs
Did John Loudon McAdam invent tarmac?
No. Tar binding was a later improvement on his stone method; his own tie to tar was through a colliery business.
No. McAdam's macadamisation used layered crushed stone, not tar. Tarmac, short for tar macadam, came later, when tar (originally coal tar) was introduced to bind the road surface's stones together. His only direct link to tar was a business one: a colliery he operated supplied coal to the British Tar Company, and he ran its kilns.
