Scottish civil engineer, architect and stonemason who built roads, canals, bridges and aqueducts across Britain, including the Menai Suspension Bridge and much of the Caledonian Canal. He became the first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1820, an organization that helped establish civil engineering as a formal profession.
