A broad class of transport modes in which cables pull or carry vehicles, moving passengers and goods in cable cars, aerial tramways, gondola lifts, chairlifts and funiculars. The cable, driven externally, substitutes for onboard propulsion, which suits steep grades and spans that defeat other modes.
