The Ilyushin Il-76 is a four engine Soviet designed strategic and tactical military transport aircraft that first flew in 1971, developed to replace older piston and early jet transports with an aircraft capable of operating from short, unpaved airstrips despite its large size. It has been widely used by the Soviet and later Russian air forces and numerous other operators for military airlift, aerial refueling and, in a specialized variant, aerial firefighting.
