The Saab 37 Viggen is a Swedish multirole military aircraft built with a distinctive double-delta wing and forward canard, entering Swedish Air Force service in 1971 as one of the first canard-delta combat aircraft to reach production anywhere in the world. Developed to meet Sweden's policy of a self-sufficient defense industry and its doctrine of dispersing combat aircraft onto short road strips rather than concentrating them on vulnerable air bases, it was built with a thrust-reverser and reinforced landing gear suited to short-field operation, and separate variants covered the interceptor, attack and reconnaissance roles.
