The Sukhoi Su-5, also called the I-107, was a Soviet mixed-power prototype fighter built toward the end of the Second World War. The appearance of the German Me 262 jet pushed the Soviet Union to seek faster fighters, and because it lacked a production-ready turbojet, designers paired a conventional piston engine and propeller with a small motorjet for bursts of speed. The Su-5 was a conventional all-metal monoplane powered by a Klimov VK-107A engine, with a Kholshchevnikov VRDK motorjet in the rear fuselage driven from the piston engine, able to add about 100 km/h for three minutes. It was designed in 1944, first flew on 6 April 1945 and later reached 793 km/h with the motorjet running. The piston engine was damaged and then wore out, no further VK-107A engines could be found, and the project was cancelled.
