Sukhoi Su-1

Military Aircraft

The Sukhoi Su-1, also designated I-330, was a prototype Soviet high-altitude fighter built at the start of the Second World War. Sukhoi was tasked in 1939 with designing it, and the result was a conventional monoplane with a streamlined wooden semi-monocoque fuselage, a low-set all-metal wing and an unpressurized cockpit. Its key feature was a pair of TK-2 turbochargers driven by the exhaust of a Klimov M-105P engine. The prototype was completed at the Sukhoi plant in Kharkov in May 1940 and first flew on 15 June 1940, reaching about 641 km/h at 10,000 metres during limited testing that continued until April 1941. The turbochargers proved unreliable, and without them the aircraft was inferior to the Yakovlev Yak-1. An improved second prototype, the Su-3 or I-360, had a smaller wing and flew in 1941, but development was cancelled and neither version was mass-produced.
