Mitsubishi J4M Senden

Military Aircraft

The Mitsubishi J4M Senden, meaning Flashing Lightning, was a Japanese Second World War interceptor fighter proposed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Imperial Japanese Navy, and it never went beyond the design stage. The plan was a single-seat, twin-boom, low-wing monoplane with a central nacelle that held the cockpit and, behind the pilot, a Mitsubishi Ha-43 radial engine of about 1,590 kilowatts driving a four-bladed pusher propeller turning between the booms. It was to have tricycle landing gear and an armament of one 30 mm and two 20 mm cannon. Design of the first J4M1 version ended when the Navy put its support behind the competing Kyushu J7W, and Mitsubishi never built a prototype. The Allies nonetheless gave it the reporting name Luke.
