Grumman F2F

Military Aircraft

The Grumman F2F was a single-engine biplane fighter with retractable undercarriage that served as the standard fighter of the United States Navy between 1936 and 1940, designed for both carrier and land-based operation. It followed the two-seat FF-1, which was faster than the single-seat fighters of its day. Armed with two machine guns above the cowl, it had watertight compartments to cut weight and improve survivability after a water landing. The prototype first flew on 18 October 1933 with an experimental Twin Wasp Junior radial engine and reached 229 mph, and production aircraft used the Pratt and Whitney R-1535 engine.
