The Douglas XP-48 was a small, lightweight fighter proposed by Douglas Aircraft in 1939 for evaluation by the United States Army Air Corps, a time when several countries were exploring very light fighters derived from racing aircraft. Designated Model 312 by Douglas, it was to use a supercharged Ranger inverted V-12 engine, carry a pair of machine guns and have a wing of unusually high aspect ratio. Douglas claimed a top speed of at least 350 miles per hour. A single prototype was ordered on 5 August 1939, but doubts about the troubled engine and the optimistic performance estimates led the Army to cancel the contract in February 1940, and no aircraft was built.
