The Avro 566 Avenger was a single-seat, single-engine British biplane fighter prototype of the 1920s, designed and built by Avro as a private venture. Roy Chadwick gave it a wood and fabric structure of unusual aerodynamic cleanliness for its time. It first flew on 26 June 1926 with a 525 hp Napier Lion VIII, but no order followed, partly because the Air Ministry no longer favoured the Lion as a fighter engine. In May 1928 it was rebuilt as a racer with equal-span wings and a 553 hp Lion and redesignated Avro 567 Avenger II. It never entered production and ended its days as an instructional airframe.
