Sukhoi Su-8

Military Aircraft

The Sukhoi Su-8, known as the DDBSh (twin-engine two-seat armored ground attack aircraft), was a Soviet prototype ground-attack aircraft of the Second World War. Sukhoi developed it alongside the lighter Su-6 after Soviet commanders saw in May 1942 a need for an aircraft that could support offensives far from its airfields and strike lines of communication behind the front. It was massive, heavily armed and armoured, with the cockpit, engines, fuel tanks and oil coolers armoured to a total of 1,680 kg, more than twice the armour shell of an Il-2. Two prototypes were completed in 1943 and the first flight test came on 11 March 1944, delayed by a shortage of Shvetsov M-71 engines. Testing succeeded, but by then the Soviet armies had reached the German border and the Su-8 was not approved for mass production.
