The Sukhoi Su-7, NATO reporting name Fitter-A, is a swept-wing supersonic fighter developed in the Soviet Union in 1955. It was designed first as a tactical low-level dogfighter and was not successful in that role, but the Su-7B series that followed became the main Soviet fighter-bomber and ground-attack aircraft of the 1960s. The first prototype, the S-1, used the new Lyulka AL-7 turbojet and first flew on 7 September 1955; after an afterburning version of the engine was fitted it set a Soviet speed record of 2,170 km/h in April 1956. The aircraft was rugged and simple, but the engine burned so much fuel that even short missions needed drop tanks on at least two hardpoints, which limited the payload. A total of 1,847 Su-7 and its variants were built, and India bought 140 in 1967.
