The Sukhoi Su-34, NATO reporting name Fullback, is a twin-engine, twin-seat, all-weather supersonic fighter-bomber derived from the Su-27 Flanker. Its armoured cockpit is wider than the Su-27's and seats the two pilots side by side. It was designed mainly for tactical strikes against ground and naval targets by day and night, in bad weather and against electronic countermeasures, and also for aerial reconnaissance. The first prototype made its maiden flight on 13 April 1990 for the Soviet Air Forces, the first aircraft to production standard flew on 28 December 1994 after budget restrictions repeatedly stalled the programme, and the type entered service with the Russian Air Force in 2014. It is powered by two Saturn AL-31FM1 turbofan engines.
