McDonnell Douglas A-4G Skyhawk

Military Aircraft

The McDonnell Douglas A-4G Skyhawk was the version of the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk light attack aircraft built for the Royal Australian Navy. It was based on the A-4F, carried slightly different avionics without the hump behind the cockpit that marked the A-4F, and could fire AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, which suited it to defending the fleet. Twenty were delivered, ten in 1967 and ten in 1971, and they flew from the carrier HMAS Melbourne until the Navy gave up fixed-wing flying in 1984. Ten were lost in accidents. The remaining ten passed to the Royal New Zealand Air Force, which upgraded them under Project Kahu and re-designated them A-4K; six were later sold to Draken International for training support in the United States.
