Caproni Ca.355

Military Aircraft

The Caproni Ca.355 Tuffo was a low-wing, single-engine dive bomber designed and built by Caproni in 1941 that never went beyond one prototype. Derived from the Ca.335 Maestrale by engineer Cesare Pallavicino and developed by the Cantieri Aeronautici Bergamaschi subsidiary, it was proposed to the Regia Aeronautica as an answer to a 1939 specification for an aircraft of the Junkers Ju 87 class. The fuselage was slimmed and the second cockpit removed, air brakes were added to the wing and a tubular trapeze was fitted to clear the propeller when a bomb was dropped in a dive; the engine was an Isotta Fraschini Delta. Ettore Wengi flew the prototype on 14 January 1941, but the military judged its performance little better than the Stuka and the project was abandoned; the fate of the sole aircraft is unknown.
