The Sukhoi Su-24, known to NATO as Fencer, is a supersonic, all-weather tactical bomber with a variable-sweep wing, twin engines and side-by-side seating for a crew of two. It was the first aircraft of the Soviet Union to carry an integrated digital navigation and attack system. Development began in the early 1960s, the type first flew in 1967 and it entered service in 1974, and production ceased in 1993 after about 1,400 had been built. The upgraded Su-24M added in-flight refuelling and a wider choice of weapons, and dedicated reconnaissance and electronic intelligence versions were built from it. The aircraft remains in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces and with Iran, Ukraine, Algeria and other air forces.
