North American AJ Savage

Military Aircraft

The North American AJ Savage, later the A-2 Savage, was a United States Navy carrier-based medium bomber built by North American Aviation. It was designed shortly after the Second World War to carry atomic bombs, which needed a bomb load of 12,000 pounds and made it the heaviest aircraft yet built to operate from a carrier. It was powered by two piston engines under the wings and a turbojet mounted in the rear fuselage. The first prototype flew in July 1948 and the AJ-1 entered service in 1950, and several were deployed to South Korea in 1953 as a deterrent. A total of 140 were built along with three prototypes, thirty of them configured for reconnaissance. The Douglas A3D Skywarrior began replacing it in 1957.
