The Mitsubishi G1M was a long-range twin-engined attack bomber that Mitsubishi built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the 1930s. Only one prototype was made, first called the Navy Experimental 8-Shi Special Reconnaissance Aircraft and renamed the 8-Shi Land based Medium Attack Aircraft before it flew. It was a predecessor of the Mitsubishi G3M, an important step toward more capable land-based Navy bombers such as the G4M Betty. It was a monoplane powered by two Hiro Type 91 water-cooled W12 engines, with a crew of five and a range of about 4,400 kilometres. It is often confused with the biplane 3MT5, which shares the G1M label in some sources.
