The Mitsubishi B1M, the Navy Type 13 Carrier-Borne Attack Aircraft, was a Japanese biplane torpedo bomber of the 1920s, designed and built by Mitsubishi for the Imperial Japanese Navy, with some also used by the Army. The British designer Herbert Smith, then working with Mitsubishi, created the 2MT1 two-seat biplane that first flew in January 1923 and went into Navy service as the B1M1. The type entered service in 1924 and served into the 1930s, and thirty-two flew from the carriers Kaga and Hosho during the Shanghai Incident of 1932. It was used in combat against China. Production versions had a Napier Lion or a Mitsubishi V-12 engine, and Mitsubishi and the Hiro Naval Arsenal built several hundred.
