The Fiat BR.20 Cicogna, Italian for stork, was a low-wing twin-engine medium bomber built by Fiat Aviazione to a 1934 request from the Italian Royal Air Force. Celestino Rosatelli led the design team, and the BR in its name stands for Bombardiere Rosatelli. The first prototype flew from Turin on 10 February 1936 and deliveries to the Regia Aeronautica began that September. It was the first all-metal Italian bomber to enter service and was regarded as one of the most modern medium bombers of its day. The type flew with the Aviazione Legionaria in the Spanish Civil War, was built under licence in Japan and saw combat in China, and was the standard Italian medium bomber when Italy entered the Second World War, by which time it was close to obsolete. More than 500 were built before the war ended, and later versions in the BR.20M and BR.20bis lines were slightly longer and better armed.
