John Philip Holland

Maritime and Shipping Figures

John Philip Holland (1841-1914) was an Irish-American engineer, born in Liscannor, County Clare, who developed the first submarine formally commissioned by the United States Navy, USS Holland (SS-1), and the first Royal Navy submarine, Holland 1. After decades of work on submersibles he settled on a design that used electric motors for travel underwater and gasoline engines on the surface, a combination that made the submarine a practical vessel. He died in Newark, New Jersey, on August 12, 1914.

FAQs

Who paid for John Philip Holland's first experimental submarines?

The Fenians in America financed his first experimental craft after the US Navy rejected his design.

The Fenians in America did. According to a profile from the Ask About Ireland reading room, Holland saw submarines as a way an Irish patriot could use against the ships of the British Navy in the fight for Irish independence. He offered his projected submarine to the United States Navy, which rejected it, and the Fenians then financed his first experimental one-man craft, tested with some success in 1878.
