John Philip Holland (1841-1914) was an Irish-American engineer, born in Liscannor, County Clare, who developed the first submarine formally commissioned by the United States Navy, USS Holland (SS-1), and the first Royal Navy submarine, Holland 1. After decades of work on submersibles he settled on a design that used electric motors for travel underwater and gasoline engines on the surface, a combination that made the submarine a practical vessel. He died in Newark, New Jersey, on August 12, 1914.
