Kamov Ka-40

Lighter-Than-Air Craft and Rotorcraft

The Kamov Ka-40 is reported to be a new anti-submarine helicopter based on the Ka-27, under development from 1990 to replace it. The design has a pointed streamlined nose and is reportedly powered by two 1,838 kW Klimov TVA-3000 turboshaft engines driving a coaxial rotor system. A civil variant was to carry a 7,000 kg underslung load, while the naval variant could include anti-submarine weapons and electronics, with APR-3 water-jet torpedoes and KAB-250PL guided depth charges expected. The projected normal take-off weight is 12,500 kg and the maximum 14,500 kg. Development was suspended in 1998.
