Aérospatiale SA 321 Super Frelon

Lighter-Than-Air Craft and Rotorcraft

The Aérospatiale SA 321 Super Frelon, meaning Super Hornet, is a three-engined heavy transport helicopter built by Sud Aviation of France and later by its successor Aérospatiale. It grew out of the SE.3200 Frelon, which never entered production, and its prototype first flew on 7 December 1962. In July 1963 a modified example set the FAI absolute helicopter speed record of 350.4 km/h. Civil and military versions were made, but most went to military buyers, chiefly naval air arms such as the French Naval Aviation and the Chinese navy. Aérospatiale ended production in 1981 for lack of orders, and China built it under licence as the Changhe Z-8.
