Kamov Ka-50

Lighter-Than-Air Craft and Rotorcraft

The Kamov Ka-50 Black Shark, NATO reporting name Hokum A, is a Soviet and Russian single-seat attack helicopter with the coaxial rotor system typical of the Kamov design bureau. It was designed in the 1980s, adopted by the Russian army in 1995 and is built by the Progress company in Arsenyev. It serves as a heavily armed scout helicopter and has a rescue ejection system, which is rare in helicopters. Without a tail rotor it can loop, roll and fly the funnel, circle-strafing a target. Kamov and Israel Aerospace Industries developed a tandem-seat Ka-50-2 Erdogan for Turkey, and Kamov also designed the two-seat Ka-52 Alligator, NATO reporting name Hokum B.
