An artificial sea level waterway in Egypt connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, built by the Suez Canal Company under Ferdinand de Lesseps and opened on 17 November 1869. It eliminated the need for ships trading between Europe and Asia to sail around the southern tip of Africa, cutting the voyage by thousands of miles, and remains one of the worlds most important shipping chokepoints.
