A rapid transit system serving Greater London, whose first section, the Metropolitan Railway, opened on 10 January 1863 as the worlds first underground urban passenger railway, built by cut and cover excavation and initially operated by steam locomotives. It grew into the deep level tube network familiar today and remains one of the busiest metro systems in the world.
