Autobahn

Roads, Highways and Trade Routes

The Autobahn is Germany's federal controlled-access highway network, notable internationally for having no general federally mandated speed limit across large sections, though many stretches do carry local limits for safety or environmental reasons. Its earliest sections were built beginning in the early 1930s, expanding rapidly in the years that followed as Germany pursued one of the first extensive limited-access road networks in the world, a model that later influenced highway systems built elsewhere including the American Interstate system. Today it forms the backbone of long-distance road travel and freight movement within Germany and links into the wider European motorway network.

Facts

Completion Year
1932 1
The Autobahn network has no single completion date; it grew over decades rather than opening all at once. The first public limited-access road of this kind, later designated Bundesautobahn 555, was completed between Cologne and Bonn in 1932. A separate stretch from Frankfurt am Main to Darmstadt, opened in 1935, is sometimes credited instead as the first true Autobahn because it more closely matched the later standard design.
Significance
The autobahns formed the first limited-access, high-speed road network in the world, with the first section from Frankfurt am Main to Darmstadt opening in 1935. 1
