Martin PBM Mariner

Flying Boats and Seaplanes

The Martin PBM Mariner is an American twin engine flying boat that entered United States Navy service in 1940, used throughout the Second World War for long range maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare and air-sea rescue in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. It served alongside the smaller PBY Catalina as one of the Navy's principal patrol flying boats and remained in service into the early 1950s.

FAQs

Why did Martin build a scale flying model of the PBM Mariner before the prototype flew?

The Martin 162A scale model was built to prove the company performance claims to a sceptical audience.

Martin built a three-eighths scale flying model, the Martin 162A, to prove its performance projections in the face of scepticism, in addition to the full-scale prototype designated XPBM-1. The Mariner was designed to complement the Consolidated PBY Catalina and PB2Y Coronado then in service with the United States Navy. Unusually, the Navy placed an initial production order before the prototype was complete. That prototype made its first flight on 18 February 1939.
