Zheng He

Zheng He was a Chinese mariner, explorer and diplomat who commanded seven major maritime expeditions for the Ming dynasty between 1405 and 1433, commanding fleets of treasure ships that were, for their time, among the largest wooden vessels ever built. His voyages carried Chinese fleets across Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula and the East African coast, establishing trade relationships and tributary ties years before major European voyages of exploration reached comparable distances. Zheng He's fleets combined diplomatic missions with naval power projection, at times intervening militarily in local political disputes to secure favorable trade terms for the Ming court. The expeditions ended after 1433 amid a shift in Ming court priorities toward continental defense, and the treasure fleet was subsequently dismantled, a decision historians have long debated as a turning point in the divergence between Chinese and European maritime ambitions.
