Sydney Camm

Sir Sydney Camm was a British aircraft designer who served as chief designer and later chief engineer at Hawker Aircraft, where he was responsible for a line of fighter aircraft that shaped Royal Air Force capability across several decades. His most significant design was the Hawker Hurricane, which entered service in 1937 and formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, shooting down more enemy aircraft than any other Allied type in that campaign. Camm went on to design the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest fighters used later in the Second World War, and after the war he led development of the Hawker Hunter jet fighter and the Hawker P.1127, the experimental aircraft that evolved into the Harrier jump jet, the first operational vertical and short takeoff and landing fighter. Camm's career at Hawker spanned more than four decades and produced some of the most significant combat aircraft in British aviation history.
