Shane Chen is a Chinese-American inventor and entrepreneur best known for inventing the self-balancing hoverboard. Born in Beijing in 1956, he studied agricultural meteorology before emigrating to the United States in the mid-1980s. He founded CID Bio-Science in 1988 to build scientific instruments for agricultural research and sold the company in 2009 to focus on consumer product invention through his company Inventist. Beyond the hoverboard, he created the Solowheel self-balancing electric unicycle, the Orbitwheel skates, the UltraDrainer and the Lunicycle. He is based in Camas, Washington.
