He vanished from a cross-Channel steamer in 1913 and the cause of his death remains unsolved.
On the evening of 29 September 1913, Diesel boarded the steamer SS Dresden in Antwerp on his way to a meeting in London. He retired to his cabin at about 10 p.m. and was never seen alive again; by morning the cabin was empty and the bed had not been slept in. Ten days later a Dutch pilot boat crew found a body in the Eastern Scheldt and returned it to the sea after taking personal items, which his son Eugen identified on 13 October as his father's. Theories include suicide, murder and a staged disappearance, and given the limited evidence his disappearance and death remain unsolved.
