English railway engineer who built the Stockton and Darlington Railway, opened in 1825 as the first public railway to carry steam locomotive traffic, and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway of 1830, the first railway to rely exclusively on steam traction on a scheduled timetable. He designed early locomotives including Locomotion No. 1, and with his son Robert built the Rocket, winner of the 1829 Rainhill Trials. Widely called the father of railways. What is Stephenson gauge and why does it matter?
It is the track gauge Stephenson chose and the basis of the standard gauge used by most of the world's railways.
Stephenson gauge is the rail gauge George Stephenson chose for his railways. It became the basis for the standard gauge of 4 feet 8.5 inches (1.435 metres) that most of the world's railways use today, so much of the modern network still carries the spacing he picked.
